We told you this year’s Symposium was going to be bigger and better than years before...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This year through a collaboration of PA APSE and @NetworksForTraining, we bring to you a pre-conference on Friday, September 25th.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Join us in welcoming Colwin Williams of Cure Violence Philadelphia who will speak on the intersections of poverty, violence, employment, and mental health.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Colwin first began getting in trouble in school, fighting in order to appear tough. As he got older, the trouble continued. He got caught up in drugs and by his early 20s, Colwin had spent years in and out of county jail for armed robberies — a result, he said, of trying to support his addiction. Then in 1993, just two months after his 25th birthday, he was sentenced to almost 20 years in prison. Colwin recounts rough times — and a close call — during his incarceration at SCI Greene in western Pennsylvania. This served as the catalyst for him to turn his life around. “I didn’t want to live like this,” Colwin said. “I ain’t want to leave my family and I ain’t want to leave this earth not having accomplished nothing.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don’t miss this! Register today! Link in bio.

Meet Nikita! (She may look familiar because she’s been on POTJ’s IG Live!)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Nikita is the Transition and Research Liaison at Networks for Training and Development, Inc and has been a member of the Philadelphia Employment First Steering Committee since 2018.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When asked about why she supports Employment First she says, “I really believe in the beauty and value of having a diverse workplace. To me, diversity is a no-brainer. Our communities are full of people of various cultural backgrounds, religions, abilities, languages, and identities. Our workplaces should reflect that.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Outside of work, Nikita is all about curating experiences that spark joy in her life such as: listening to podcasts (her fave is Home Cooking with Samin Nosrat & Hrishikesh Hirway), enjoying a pint of @zsas ice cream, and binging Supermarket Sweep on Netflix. Can you tell she LOVES thinking about food? 😊⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
P.S- It was her birthday this week! 🎂🎈⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

#MythBusterMonday
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
MYTH: People with disabilities cannot work.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
FACT: People, including those with significant disabilities, can indeed work.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Work comes in all forms from amount of days and hours to the type of industries and tasks across our economy. The question is are businesses and the workforce welcoming and also willing to think creatively. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) was created to mandate that employers make reasonable accommodations. However, there are myths and stigmas that have people not wanting to speak up and ashamed to disclose having a disability along with their needs to their employer.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On a holiday that exudes an inclusive spirit, let’s take a moment to reflect how each of us can do and be better.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Guess what day it is?! That’s right, we are spotlighting another member of the Philadelphia Employment First Steering Committee.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Shari is the Manager of the Philadelphia’s Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (BVRS or also known as Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, OVR). Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her three children.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When asked why Employment First is important to her, Shari shared “Everyone has something to contribute to the world; I enjoy helping people find out what that is.” Shari grew up watching her mom work in the field sharing,
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“My mother worked in this field her entire life. As a child, I spent many days with my mother in state hospitals where, unfortunately, the ability to be independent and opportunities for growth were denied to individuals with disabilities. My mother has always encouraged me to see what makes each of us unique and highlighting this. As an adult, I am encouraged by the fact that some of those same individuals are now out in the community working in integrated settings.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are so grateful for all Shari does to empower people!

Did you know why Labor Day was created?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was a creation of the labor movement, dedicated to achievements (social and economical) of American workers.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let us take the time to reflect this weekend of the contributions that workers have made, but also note how many barriers exist for those who look to enter and advance in the workforce. Let us reflect on the incredible contributions those workers could provide to strengthen the well-being of the United States of America.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For more information, visit www.DOL.gov/general/laborday/history.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Be kind to all those working this weekend. Be safe and enjoy the weekend!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Last week’s Employment Forum was an open discussion with providers, self-advocates, and family members on supporting individuals who work with the general public and encourage CDC guidelines to wear masks. We discussed the increase of assaults and aggression in the community and strategies essential employees can use when encouraging others to follow CDC guidelines.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Strategies included meeting with managers/leadership, advocating on behalf of the individual to be assigned alternative duties/responsibilities, and to practice control of the environment to minimize stress. The following resource was offered for situations where sources of communication with employers to comply with CDC guidelines have been exhausted:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Meet another Steering Committee Member, Susan!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Susan grew up with an older brother who was born with multiple disabilities in a time when options were severely limited for people with disabilities. She assumed a leading role as his advocate at an early age, which led her to pursue studies in special education. In her studies, Susan first learned about supported employment and quickly recognized that working in the community is the optimal means for people with disabilities to lead lives of independence, productivity, and self-sufficiency. Susan has dedicated her life's work to Employment First.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As Executive Director of Community Integrated Services ( @CIS_Works), whose mission is focused solely on employment, she has driven the organization's unwavering commitment to helping people with disabilities get to work in real jobs for real pay.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Meet Theresa B. of the Philadelphia Employment Steering Committee!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As Director of Intellectual Disability Services with Citizens Acting Together Can Help, Inc (CATCH), Theresa shares,
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“I became passionate about Employment First through my experience in working with families who didn’t want their loved one to work; they expressed they wanted to protect them from failure. I enjoyed the challenge of getting them to see the opposite outcome: what if they succeed? I was inspired when I met people with disabilities working in the community. They were typically happy to be working, enjoyed social interaction, and were comfortable with who they are. I loved the enthusiasm and the confidence they displayed. I want everyone to be able to experience life this way, to feel welcomed and accepted as an important contributing member of their community. I changed roles from a Support Coordinator Administrator to an Employment Provider and I wanted to become more involved in helping spread the word about the importance of Employment for all, so I joined the Steering Committee.

Some of my interests include advocacy, mentoring, and transition planning.
When I am not working, I enjoy bike riding, walks, trips to the beach, and reading.”

As we all continue to figure out how to move forward - in work, in school, in life - let’s think about what we do have control of.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Something we have control of is the action we choose to take each day. Maybe that is advocating for yourself at work. Maybe that is learning how you can increase your safety when you choose where you go to exercise or socialize. Maybe that is simply asking questions or practicing self-care.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Phila On The Job is here to support you with questions about work and navigating conversations you may have not had yet on your employment journey. From resume questions to conversations with your supervisor, we’re here to support.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let us know what questions you have and we will seek to support you in upcoming videos, as well as posts.
